A Girl and Her Desk

A Girl and Her Desk

July 30, 2019

Recently, several people have asked about how The Back Porch Mercantile started. It’s a special story to me and one I love to share. My Grandma left me a desk when she passed away that I grew up playing at on summer visits. I decided it would be a great piece for our guest bedroom, but needed a little update with paint and love.

I started the project and it was a very long process to the good part of making it pretty. After stripping it and getting it ready, I was feeling pretty exhausted about the whole thing. I started to paint it a grey latex paint that looked very flat. I then had to do several layers of that and acrylics to give it some dimension. After that project, I decided to do some research of finding a better way to breathe new life into furniture. Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan just entered the market and was in a couple of places in the US. I was sold on it immediately with no prep, no priming and gorgeous pigmented colors. The rest is history! I loved it and knew I wanted to bring it to our area. (The first color I ever used was Provence.)

My first sale of paint was in the Chic Fil A parking lot one day after my shipment arrived. I started with a small shelf of paint and grew into a lifestyle shop with goods carefully selected with love for our customers. It’s been an exciting journey with so many new friends along the way!

Grandma never knew when she left me a desk that she was leaving me a whole lot more! I know she would so excited to hear about the shop and the creativity. It’s been a blessing to see so many people create beautiful things!

I would love to hear your story. What inspires you to create?
